Update and Enhance the Entryway

Of course first impressions matter.  Investing in a new front door or paint your old one, it can change the look of your home dramatically and surely enhance curb appeal.  Repainting the exterior trim, replacing the house numbers or installing new outdoor lighting are some other easy DIY fixes you can try.

Install a New Backsplash

There are alternatives to the expensive tile backsplash, try something simple and inexpensive like tin ceiling tiles, or wooden beadboard, wallpaper, stainless steel, chalkboard or magnetic paint.

Build a headboard

Headboards can be made out of anything.  Find something that intrigues you and turn it into a headboard.  Use old skis, skateboards; or make a collage by decoupaging magazines or attach family photos to an old headboard.  There is always salvaged materials such as fencing, old doors or window shutters that make great materials for headboards.

Add Architectural Interest

Adding a chair rail, picture molding, crown molding or baseboard can change the look of any room. Take accurate measurements and ask a lumber yard or home improvement store to pre-cut all the pieces to size to make it an easy process.

Illuminating Ideas

It's amazing how new kitchen lighting or a new fixture over the dining table can brighten up any holiday meal. Try one of these projects: Make a fabric-covered drum shade to match your decor, install a  dimmer switch to make your current lighting more versatile.  Use a few cans of spray paint to give an old chandelier new life. Replace or paint the blades on a ceiling fan.

Accessorize the Cabinets

An inexpensive and easy update is replacing the cabinet hardware.  Finding knobs and pulls that are the same size as the existing ones is a good way to not have to re-drill the cabinets.

Cabinet Facelift

Sometimes cabinets need more than new hardware to update them.  Painting them can be a time-consuming project, but if one right, your kitchen will look brand new and add value to your home.

Get Creative in a Small Space

Using a small room in your home is a great place to try different and fun designs. Spiff up a half bathroom with a bold paint color, a faux finish, or chic wallpaper.

Change Out the Faucets

Need extra shine in the kitchen or bathroom, a new fixture in either room will do the trick. New kitchen faucets have a lot more functionality, so the upgrade can be more than just aesthetic.  This will also give you practice for a first time DIY plumbing project to try. Always follow the directions carefully.

Construct a Cornice Box

Are you a beginner woodworker?  A wooden cornice box is an easy project, you can cover it with fabric, paint it, or add crown molding.  Cornices make windows look bigger and can add visual height to a room.
